Condolences

  • Fond memories of Iain while I was working in Admin at QAC.  Always a gentleman and he loved a chat. I enjoyed catching up with him on several occasions over the years and at the UQGPSA Gold Coast Re-Union Lunches.  I learnt a lot about Iain's life while listening to the Eulogy including the surprising mention that he was an Elvis fan.  Our thoughts and prayers have been with Morag and all the Bruce families - Iain will be fondly remembered by many who knew him at QAC & UQ Gatton during his many years as a staff member (1960-1996).  Julie Reid

  • Please accept my sympathies on Iain's passing. I came to know Iain when we both worked at QAC, where our academic interests overlapped and where we both lived on the campus. Iain was a highly respected colleague -- his advice on statistics was valued by all including myself, and his musical ability and contribution was also much appreciated. May he rest in peace, warmly remembered.

  • Morag and family, I offer my condolences on the loss of Iain. I have fond memories of the time we worked together at Gatton. I am sorry that I was not able to be with you this morning to celebrate Iain's life but I am afraid the ravages of time are catching up with me also and I was not able to make the trip from the Sunshine Coast to Toowoomba and return in one day. However, I was able to watch the livestream of this most fitting tribute him. May he Rest in Peace.

  • Vale Iain Bruce
Former President of the Queensland Highland Pipers Society (1971-74) and author of "Silver Chanters", the story of the first 25 years of the Society, published in 1990, Iain was a Queensland Piper of note.
He was taught first by the legendary Jimmy Lawrie, turn-cock at the water tower at Paddington and the most notable piping teacher in Brisbane in the pre and post WWII era. Later Iain received extensive tuition in Piobaireachd from Donald MacKinnon, who had a Scottish piping pedigree second to none.
Iain went on to become a significant solo competitor and also played in top Brisbane bands such as the Red Hackle and the Queensland Irish in their heydays. He was also a respected judge of solo playing, both light music and Piobaireachd, and Pipe Bands.
With all of that Iain was a fine friend to many in the piping world, a source of wise counsel and a great source of knowledge about the Great Highland Bagpipe and its music.
He also had a successful career as a lecturer and later a Professor at the University of Queensland at its Lawes campus.
Iain died on 6 June in Toowoomba and his funeral will be at St Theresa's Parish Centre, 55 Curzon Street, Toowoomba, on Monday 15 June at 11, followed by interment at the Garden of Remembrance. He was 87 years old. Our thoughts are with his daughter Morag and her family at this time. Iain's wife Doreen, who was also an important figure in Queensland piping circles as an administrator, predeceased him by many years.

  • Sincere condolences to all of Ian's Family. Ian taught me Statistics at Gatton College in the early Seventies. Then in the mid-Eighties, Ian helped me with agricultural database searches. Ian appeared to me as a wizard, totally at home in the new world of computers as well as in the mysterious world on mathematics and statistical analysis. Also, his bagpipe playing matched what seemed to be his joyful, Celtic nature. Go to God, Ian. You left good impressions on many students. Cheers, Peter Jacobson.
