Maxine Lea Wood was born on the 15th of July 1994 – she took her time to meet the world, arriving a couple of weeks late and perfect as a cherub! (Her Nanna said she was the most beautiful baby she had ever seen)
Maxi, the little girl with the most beautiful piercing blue eyes, and a smile that melted hearts. As a toddler that smile often turned into the most gorgeous giggle – Maxi came into this world full of joy.
If Maxi could be described in one word, it would be “Kind”.
The little girl with the golden heart, Maxi used to collect kids in the playground who needed a friend – kindness was Maxi’s Superpower as a child.
One of Maxi’s closest childhood friends, Lily, put so well how much Maxi made an impact on her life:
Lily said: “When I think back to my childhood, my most special favourite memories were spent with Maxi – riding bikes up and down the footpath out the front of our homes, playing Sing-star (Maxi absolutely LOVED Sing-star!), trick-or-treating, and getting to tag along with Maxi and the family to the speedway and motorbike riding.”
Maxi did love anything with wheels – she loved scooting around on her heel-wheelie shoes, then upgraded to her much-loved roller blades. When the family moved to Bangalow, they arrived at about 6 in the morning. The first question Maxi had was “where are my wheels?”
Besides zipping around on Heelies, bikes and rollerblades, Maxi also loved going ice skating as a kid. It was her ultimate happy place as a special outing. Many a trip was made to Bundall ice-rink with her friends, for plenty of hours of fun and laughs (whether upright or getting a damp backside!).
Maxi always wanted to try everything – and whatever she did try, she always put her everything into it! She started with ballet, and tap dancing, then got into Hip Hop dancing – her favourite!
Maxi even joined the circus – yes! The Spaghetti Circus!! She spent about 8 years working on her inner acrobat, and her specialty was the Unicycle.
Another childhood sport Maxi really dived into was soccer – classic Maxi, she raced onto the field for her first game at about 9 years old, bursting with excitement, with half of the family there to cheer her on from the sidelines.
The game got underway, and Maxi was off and running – she smiled and waved to us as she chased around the field. The only challenge that first day was that every time the ball was kicked near her, she would squeal and run in the opposite direction!
Giving it her all, Maxi did keep up her enthusiasm for the game and found her inner Matilda on the field.
Speaking of Matilda – Maxi loved that movie so much that from about the age of 5, every visit to Nanna and Pop’s place usually included another run of that video… most of the family could almost recite the story word-for-word.
In about 5th grade, Maxi joined in the primary school music group. At her first concert, she had a wonderful time putting her all into the performance, and managed to smile the entire way through the concert. The tricky thing was – she was playing flute and was supposed to be blowing in her mouthpiece. Maxi later explained that the other flute player was so good, she wanted to let them be heard!
Maxi was the proud Mum who made Harrison and Samuel’s days magical. Maxi worked hard for her family, and we could see so many pieces falling into place in her life:
Maxi was proud to be part of the Southbrook community in her first owned home with her 3 boys, and recently had made a great career move into the field of inclusive employment support – classic Maxi, another way to help people.
We will miss Maxi Lea every day – we will have to watch over her dreams for her now. Please - Talk about her often, share stories of Maxi and keep memories of her close in your hearts. She will be forever in ours.
