Dear Mum/ Grandma,
Thank you for being the incredible mum that you were and will continue to be, as your spirit and love live on through all of us. Raising four beautiful, loving, strong-willed, and independent daughters—despite losing your own mum when I was just six months old—is a true testament to the remarkable woman you were.
Guidance Through Life’s Moments
Thank you for being there for us during both the joyful and challenging times. Among the happiest memories are my weddings—one being just for practice, so there’s no need to dwell on that! My wedding to Paul- my best friend, held on one of the hottest April days, was filled with laughter and good times shared among family. The births of Olivia, Mia, and Perry were especially precious, as you were one of the first to hold each of them as babies. These moments, captured in cherished photos, are memories we will treasure forever. Every birthday we got to choose our favourite meal and you always made the best Sweet and Sour Pork for my birthday dinners.
Strength in Difficult Times
You stood by us during our darkest days, offering unwavering support. When we received the devastating news of Mia’s passing, you were a pillar of strength for me, even as you grieved twice as deeply as Mia’s grandmother. When Paul was diagnosed with the dreaded “C” word, you again provided comfort as my world seemed to fall apart. You and Dad visited me in Gladstone during my separation, worried about my wellbeing. At the time, I was in the angry stage, We thought it’d be a good idea to drive out to the Dam to get out of the house—my nickname used to be the Rally Driver, so you were both quite concerned about making it home safely! Years later, we can all laugh about that experience.
A Loving Home for All
Your love for animals was legendary; every stray seemed to know that you’re and Dad’s house was a safe haven. Cats, dogs, koalas, echidnas, possums, lizards, wallabies, kangaroos, and countless birds found refuge with you. While we never truly welcomed the snakes—even though they are beautiful—they occasionally made themselves at home, like the red belly blacks one who visited on Christmas Eve.
Messages from Olivia and Perry
From Olivia: Your love is something that will never leave us. It lives on in our family, shaping who we are, strengthening the memories we hold close, and influencing the way we care for one another. Everything you have given our family is still here and always will be. I hope you know how deeply loved and cherished you are, and how much your strength means to us all. I carry you in my heart and will love you always, and I am honoured to share your middle name, Heather.
From Perry: I will always remember the special memories you created for us, and the unique nicknames you gave everyone—mine was Pear Bear. On birthdays, your cards and gifts were crafted from your own ideas, always designed to bring happiness and a smile to my face.
Farewell and Gratitude
From Paul, Vana, Olivia, and Perry: thank you for loving us. We will always, always love you. We will miss seeing you dance and jive with Dad, miss your handwriting in our cards, miss playing Yahtzee and Forty Questions, our road trips and karaoke bringing all the kids and grandkids together. We will miss your excellent magpie renditions.
Most of all we will miss giving you hugs and kisses and hearing your voice. I am so honoured to have held your hand, I love you Mum xxx
Final Reflections
When nights are cold and the stars are few,
I close my eyes and think of you.
A silent hope, a silent tear,
A silent wish that you were here.
